Naturopathic Medicine is built upon four basic principles
Do No Harm — This principle is at the foundation of all medical care. In Naturopathic Medicine the aim is to re-balance the body with the least invasive treatments possible. Doing no harm also includes implementing therapies that nourish and strengthen the body.
Heal Through the Power of Nature — Naturopathic medicine is based upon the understanding that there are strong commonalities between the earth’s body and the human body. As such Naturopathic Medicine uses natural earth based substances to bring healing to the human body. Hydrotherapy, for example, relies on the healing qualities of water. Botanical medicines derive their restorative properties from plants, while mineral, plant and animal substances provide the foundation for Homeopathic Medicines. Each of these medications has a native intelligence that interacts with the body’s healing wisdom to bring about health, balance and harmony.
Identify and Treat the Cause — Illness does not occur without cause. Informed healthcare means learning to listen to the body and its early warning signs. Symptoms usually are the result of the body trying to bring itself into balance. Identifying the cause requires seeking the root of the problem as well as the physical cause of the disease. Symptomatic treatment, common in conventional medicine, rarely addresses the underlying disturbance. In fact symptomatic treatment may suppress the illness and make the cause more difficult to identify. Treating the cause requires addressing the body as a whole.
Doctor as Teacher — The word docere (doctor) means to teach. Naturopathic Medicine believes that the doctor’s primary function is to provide information to the patient, thus empowering them to regulate their own health. A great deal of time in a Naturopathic Doctors practice is spent educating patients.
Based upon these principles, Naturopathic Medicine uses herbs and nutrional substances to assist the body in the treatment and cure of disease and illness. Naturopathic Medicine differs from conventional medicine, in that it uses these natural substances to allow the body to cure itself. Often, conventional medicine uses drugs to treat simply the symptoms and not the underlying cause of the illness.
